Lost my Dad yesterday

Peter Berglund in Denver

>After 84 years on this earth, my dad passed yesterday. The man who taught me woodworking - the man whose chisels I ruined regularly as a boy. The man who taught me how to fix things, often simply by taking them apart, cleaning, and reassembling. He grew up in the depression, something I can barely fathom, and served with the 12th Marines Artillery in the South Pacific in WWII - something I definitely can't fathom. He taught me that anything is possible if you just turn enough effort toward it - he changed careers from sales to the ministry, entering seminary at the age of 48. In later years he morphed his woodworking from household cabinetry and small casework to miniatures beautifully detailed stuff.

I request your prayers and thoughts for my mom. Me, I didn't know I had this many tears inside me...

Peter

>My prayers & thoughts are with you, Peter. The description of this world as a 'vale of tears' is most relevant in your present experience.

You were very fortunate to have been blessed with a father who passed his skills and knowledge on to you and evidently didn't mind too much when you used/abused his tools. Certainly, your father's love for and pursuit of God is evident from your post. I want to encourage you during this time and ask you to recall one of many promises given you: "Eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, nor has it risen up into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those that love Him."

>Peter,

Sorry to hear about your dad. I lost mine in 1999 and I know how it feels, especially at first. But, I think you'll find that your dad will still be with you in a way, especially when you do things that you and your dad did together. When I'm in church, the shop, doing yard work, or fishing, my dad is constantly with me.

>It is true, he will always be with you, in everything you do. I lost my Dad in early 2000 and I still think I see him driving by in his blue Caravan.

Take care of yourself, your Mom, and everyone else in your life. Don't be afraid to lean on them when you need to.

With my deepest sympathies,

Steve Kubien

>Peter, May God be with you and your father. He made you who you are and it sounds like he did a good job just as he would have wanted.

I feel my father with me at the workbench often. I am sure you will know your father's prayer and care every day.

>WOW! Your message about your Dad moved me to remember my folks---I sure do miss them! I'll bet your Mom was especially proud of him. I hope she can remember all the good times they had together, remembering the times they laughed so hard it hurt. I hope she can remember when you were born and what your Dad had to say when he first saw you. I hope she can remember the joy she and your Dad had watching you grow up. I hope she can remember when you got your drivers license and when you were taught to drive. If she can remember these things, then she will see her husband every time you drive up. She will feel his comfort when you hug her. It won't take away the pain of loss, but it will give her reason to remember, and what a great memory it will be. I wish I could have met your Dad. I bet he was special---just like he wanted you to be. My prayer for you & your Mom is for God to hold your hands and guide you through your time of grief and that this pain in your hearts will be filled with his love.

>My thoughts and Prayers go out to you and your Family Peter. I lost my Dad in in '95. He was just 65. Still hurts. I have some of his tools which I try very hard not to mix my tools in with his. I feel very close to him when I know that I am using one of his tools. I think of him very often as I know he'd enjoy the shop I have.

He's only gone physically, but is Alive, Well and Happy in my Heart.

I hope that in time you can also feel that way, tho right now I'm sure this makes no sense to you.

>Thanks Peter for sharing this with us. My heart skipped a beat when I saw your Subject line. My Dad's 86 and hurts all over; I think he's enduring dialysis 3 times a week just for my Mom's sake.

Yes, I'll be sure to pray for you and your family. God bless you, Tom.
