>I picked up a new one at Woodcraft about a year ago, or maybe more. I was very disappointed with the quality of the plane. The mouth was not square and had defect in the side of the casting near the mouth. Every story I have heard about the newer ones is similar.
Older ones, in very good condition, sell for almost as much as a new LV medium shoulder plane. I would choose the LV unless I could find a very good Stanley 92/93 for significantly less money.

Get the LV, be happy. :)

I got lucky

>Lucky? A few hours of work? How much is your time worth? Have you had the opportunity to compare it's performance to any of the LV or L-N products?
These are all rhetorical questions, of course. I do not doubt the sincerity of your opinions or your experiences, but I think the other Mr. Reed must be cautioned to not assign equal value to anecdotal positive experiences and to long-term, head-to-head comparisons in the environment of day-in-and-day-out use in a professional cabinet shop.
