Bevel angle for 78 blade.

Rob in Ontario

>As recently posted, I now have a Stanley 78 plane. The bevel on the original blade has a very convex curve. It looks like it was hand held while gringing. The curve is so bad that I can't tell what the angle it should be. What angle should I gring the bevel to?

Thanks, Rob

>I don't know what it came with from the factory, but any bevel down rabbet plane like the 78 works well with a 25-30* bevel - I wouldn't worry about the exact #, but 30* should hold its edge a little longer than 25*

Start at 30

Jim Reed @Tallahassee

>Depends on the hardness of the blade and the nature of the wood you plane. I would start at 30 and adjust accordingly. The sweet spot is somewhere between 25 and 35. Remember also that when using the rabbet plane you should chisel out knots before you plane the area. Planing knots with a rabbit will lead to blade defects.
