First planemaking attempt... *LINK*
Rich Glisson
>This is my first attempt at plane making. I bought a Hock plane kit about a year ago when Woodworker's Supply was closing them out, and finally got around to building it. I chucked the maple wedge and dowel cross-pin and made more interesting ones out of padauk, and also fitted an inset end-grain padauk strike button on the back end. The body has a couple of coats of shellac followed by Butcher's wax. The adjusting hammers have 2 1/2" long heads--one has a 9/16" (between flats) brass head and a cherry handle. The other has a 5/8" diameter copper head and a red oak handle. The handle is from a decrepit, ancient tree that I sawed up years ago when clearing for our house. The wood is incredibly dense, smelly. and riddled with holes. Shellac and wax finish on the hammer handles.
So, how does the plane work? It cuts beautifully BUT the shavings jam in the throat relentlessly. There's just not enough room-- I am going to do some carving in there to open it up a bit, but it is annoying because it would have been WAY easier to open up and contour the throat before gluing the plane together. Live and learn.
