For every task, every wood, every woodworker, every joint, every hold down method, some, or one, tool is going to feel more appropriate in your hand.
Since only a few of us who hang around here have one (or more), of each, it's hard to use exactly the tool we would want in every situation.
Woodworkers' clubs are great for getting together and trying different tools, for different uses. I find that I end up with fewer 'wish I hadn't bought that' tools, when I can try before I buy.
The LN 9 1/2 Adjustable mouth block plane is my favorite block plane, followed by what LV calls the Apron plane, a 102 sized gem, and the LV Low Angle block.
The LV Low Angle Smoother, with both blades, is a really good plane, and well worth the cost. The LA Jack is just as well made, but I already have 5 or 6 larger planes to do almost everything I want in that range.
BTW, the notion that hand tools are less expensive to purchase and use went away in my shop some time ago. That said, I have NO power tools from my grandfather's time, and I have no doubt that my hand tools will still be useable when my great grandchildren are ready for them.
