Benefit action for a leather block plane holster

Skip in Falls Church

>A few weeks ago I put up some pictures of a holster I made for my LV medium shoulder plane and there seemed to be a lot of interest in it. Several people asked me to do an article about how to make one. So, after some consideration, I decided to do an article, however, it seemed to me that an article about making a holster for a shoulder plane would have limited application. On the other hand, I have made holsters for my block planes and it seemed to me there would be a lot more interest in how to do that. So I did an article about making a holster for a block plane. (The article was added to the article section yesterday.)

The only twist in the situation is that I already have holsters for both of my block planes and I don't need another holster. So, from the beginning, I decided I would make this holster for a benefit auction. Accordingly, I've put the holster made in the article up for a benefit auction. Any one interested, please take a look at both the article and the auction.

>In my callow youth, I worked briefly as a sheet metal worker. I remember noticing that all the trim carpenters carried block planes in little holsters at the back of the tool belt. It always struck me as a clear sign of distinction from the run-of-the-mill carpenters - "we do the fine adjusting after you nail-driving slobs put up the 2x4s." It was also, of course, practical as heck.

Very pretty piece of work. You should get lots of action on it.

Will it hold a Stanley 65 or 18?

>Hi Scott,

Bid! You know where the money's going. :) Since I don't have a 65 or 18, I can't be sure. I measured the Record from the toe to the back of the adjuster and it is about 6 3/4" while the LV is about 7". Both are 2" wide. I'd *guess* the holster could accomodate 6" to 7 1/2" lengths, maybe a little longer than that even - but won't swear to that. If it's much narrower than 2", the plane will rattle around inside the holster.

OTOH I think you're looking at this the wrong way. If you get the holster and it doesn't fit the ones you have, you have a good reason to get another block plane. :)

>Hey Scott, I'll do any thing I can to help. None of us ever have enough planes. (At least I've never heard of it happening.) :)
