>I really enjoyed your Arts & Mysteries artical, thanks. I thought a quick stab at what it was really about might flush out some interesting opinions, since it's not really about using a striking knife.

My take is that it is about finding ways to work wood with hand powered tools that are both effective (achieve the desired end result) and efficient (do so using the least time and energy) so that a woodworker could produce high quality finished pieces (SHOCK HORROR) rather than just a beautifully sharpened collection of hand tools or a large quantity of shavings and sawdust.

I would be interested to hear what others think.

PS This column looks like the beginning of the book all us newbies have been waiting for, but that's a whole NEW slippery slope!

>Andrew,

Each of the articles in this year's A&M column will examine some technique or tool. But none of the articles are about what they seem to be about.

So your average Normite gets to read about a marking tool that's little more than a curiousity (he doesn't need a marking knife). But you hand tool users will be challenged to place the technique or tool in a greater context- one that you must determine for yourselves.

I'm not being catty. I think this is a less arrogant approach. I don't have all the answers. We have to build this puzzle together. I'm just sharing my pieces with you.

>That was a very thoughtful response Adam. I look forward to the articles. I think I might have an idea what you're trying to say. I'll know if I'm close by the next article, I hope. 8^)
