David Charlesworth curved iron technique
Dan S in NC
>I've recently been trying to produce a cambered edge on the blade for my LN 4 (York pitch) a la the David C video from LN. He recommends a 23 grind with 35 and 38 for the primary and secondary microbevels, respectively. He also stresses that one *mustnt* exceed these angles.
Making the assumption that David is using a standard pitch frog, I therefore would need to reduce these angles to match the York pitch frog so as not to exceed the effective cutting angle that he recommends we *mustn't* exceed. So, I did just that.
My early attempts are leaving a rather non-smooth surface on some Douglas fir*. These are my very first forays into cambered iron territory, mind you, so more practice and fiddling are definitely in order. Even so, I'd like to know others' experience in developing the cambered iron technique in their own hands, both from developing good honing skill, setting up the plane, and putting plane to wood.
*Select grade; I'm in love with the color, grain and fabulous ray flecks. Incidentally, I've been able to get a glass-smooth surface with a straight edged iron, but the ridges are difficult to get rid of.
