>I am very pleased to announce a new series of monthly special guest chats in the Hand Tools Chat Room, moderated by none other than Chris Schwarz, executive editor of Popular Woodworking magazine.

The first chat of Chris's series will be an evening with Adam Cherubini, period furnituremaker, historian and regular contributor to the WoodCentral Hand Tools Forum. The topic of the chat will be "Arts & Mysteries: Working Quickly and Efficiently with Hand Tools," a discussion of how and why hand tool techniques have been lost and what can be done to rediscover them.

The chat will take place on Tuesday evening, February 22, 2005, beginning at 9:30pm Eastern time in the WoodCentral Chat Room. The chat is scheduled for an hour, but as with all our chats, it can go on for as long as everyone's having fun.

To whet your appetite for this very special chat, Popular Woodworking has granted WoodCentral an exclusive preview of a brand-new column that Adam will be writing for them, beginning with the next issue, due out this month. To read the column in its entirety, click the link below. The file is a 352Kb PDF (Acrobat Reader) file that may take a couple minutes to download over a modem connection.

I'm looking forward to a wonderful chat with Adam and an inspiring series with Chris. Thanks to them and to Popular Woodworking for joining us in this exciting new liason.

Ellis Walentine, Host

Thanks for the Opportunity Ellis

Christopher Schwarz

>I hope that some of you will join Adam and I for this first chat. Though I can tell you that even if no one shows up, Adam and I will have a blast in there by ourselves.

For those of you who follow our posts, I'm sure you know that Adam and I revolve in different orbits. He's passionately interested (and devoted) to exploring 18th century woodworking techniques and unlocking the secrets there that have been lost.

I tend to focus on blending power and hand tool techniques. I have to say that the last few months I've spent working with Adam to get his column started have been illuminating there is indeed a lot to learn from our past (I still won't give up my band saw, however).

We're working on his second and third columns right now and are also mapping out some full-length feature articles about Adam's trip to Colonial Williamsburg and an article that might convince you to finally unplug your table saw.

In any case, it's an honor to help host these chats and I'm working on lining up additional hand-tool guests for future months. Any suggestions (or volunteers) are warmly welcomed.

Regards,

Chris

>What a trifecta!

Ellis: thanks again for a new tweak!

Christopher: your magazine keeps getting better!

Adam: Thanks, these articles look like they will provide great insight and provoke some further thought!

It would be interesting to know how many people try a striking knife as a result of the article. I am already looking into getting one or making one!

Thanks Ellis!

>I had the pleasure of meeting Chris at the last Ft. Washington WW Show. I had a nice conversation with Chris on one of my favorite subjects, vintage Disston hand saws. He will make an excellent host!

>Chris,

Congratulations on getting Adam for the chat and to write articles for PW. Adam was a guest speaker at our WW club a while back and presented the "Arts and Mysteries". I thouroughly enjoyed his presentation then and I think it will great to tune in for the chat. The first article was superb and I am looking forward to the next.

>You won't be alone. I'll be sure to be there. I'm sure yours will be a lot more professionally moderated and focused, and with a lot more valuable information than the weekly chats I moderate on most Tuesday evenings. I'll let you pros do most of the talking.

Don't sell yourself short, Wm :-)

>I've been in some of your chats and they are always pleasant and informative. Last night was no exception. I apologize for being so tardy.

I would love to schedule other notable hand tool guests anytime, so if you or anyone else has someone in mind, please let us know.

Best regards,

Ellis

Re: modesty

>Now this is taking modesty to a whole new level. I always learn a lot from you, as well as many other people here. The only thing I think the chats need is a bit more moderation, truly hate it when everyone is going off in multiple directions, maybe my mind is just not able to process all that many things at once.

Striking knives still commercially available *LINK*

Andrew F in Australia

>Here's the one I use in my classes - it's a good quality knife and reasonably priced (prob retail at about USD5-). We buy them at trade/bulk price so we pay considerably less.

A google search shows that it's made in India - nothing wrong with the quality of these ones but

Cheers,

Andrew

My opinion on those

Christopher Schwarz

>I've got one of those. It's not going to give you the same working characteristics as the fine old ones, I'm afraid.

The blade end is beveled on both sides -- that has to be ground off to a single bevel. And the awl side is too chunky to reach into dovetails between London-pattern tails.

In fact, I had better luck making my own striking knives from spade bits. I made a few (25 cents each) on the grinder and they work great -- they're already heat-treated!

What we need is a blacksmith....
