A box for Dad

Ernie Miller

>As many of you know my dad passed saturday morning at 82 from cancer and emphasima. we had a problem on tuesday and from there he went fast with little pain. On saturday I found out he wanted to be creamated and mom wanted to go looking for a box. I told her I would take care of that for her as she had enough to deal with. I ask for some quick help from all of you and got just what I needed. using a board from a walnut tree from my brothers farm. (my dad liked it up there) I made this simple box. I used a peice of quilted maple that I had sawn off a turning blank that Dave Smith had given me several years before for the top. Dad spent his first years of marrage up is Washington where this board came from. I wish I had a little more time to work on the finish as it didn't come out as good as I would have liked but I will be taking it shortly to have Dads ashes placed in it for buryal on Thurssday. THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. Ernie

>Ernie,

I lost my father two years ago and afterwards I thought a nice tribute would be to build a flag box for the flag my mother was presented by the USA. I built it of old mahogany and did a lot of hand tool work on it. I enclosed the flag and several medals and other momentos of his life.

Building the box was a good hand tool exercise but it was also a good way to grieve my loss as well. Closing the back of the flag box for the last time was as joyous as it was sad. An ending of one part of my life and the beginning of another. I hope you find the same peace I did.
