Wood Plane

Brian Selden San Antonio

>I am a newbie to hand tool board, but was straightening out my shop and found an old wood plane that I believe is my grandfathers'. Only writing on it is "Ogontz Tool Co." , and the number 19 in another part of the lead end. The plane dimensionally is 22" long, 3" wide, and 2and7/8" high, not counting the handle. I am interested in the age of the plane and if it has any worth other then the sentamental value, as I would never part with it. TIA Brian

>The Ogontz line was made by the Sandusky Tool Co. It is believed that Sandusky started the secondary line with the Ogontz mark in the 1870's as a marketing technique, and ended production somewhere in the 1920's. Ogontz was an Indian Chief of a tribe of Ottawas who live in Sandusky Ohio. I believe examples of Ogontz planes can be said to be of equal quality to surviving Sandusky planes.
