Cocobolo Screws?

David Hammond, in Powder Springs GA

>Hey guys: I've got a great chance at some cocobolo blanks just the right size for two screws for my twin screw vise - what say ye about cocobolo's wooden screw properties? Is this ridiculus, or would the hard exotic be nice and hard, hold up well, and lubricate itself?

>I think it would work pretty well. it is pretty dense and that is important.

>Certainly it's plenty dense, but I wonder about the tensile strength to use for vise screws - might it be too brittle? Does Hoadley's book have tension/compression/shear strengths for different woods? I know many folks here have that reference work (just not me!)

>Hi Dave,

I'm not sure how it would work. All I can think is, a) what a PITA to make, b) could the coco be used for something a bit more showey like spokeshave or plane bodies, or table legs etc etc. Seems a little extravagent to me, but it's not me bench.

Sure would look cool though!

>I work with coco all the time and I supect that, although it is dense and heavy,it would be too brittle for a wood screw. The pressure would like chip out the screw threads very quickly.

>Thanks for the resonses guys! I haven't made up my mind, 'cause the coco is really cheap, and I'm making them, so if they don't last a real long time I'll still have a tap to make another pair.

Thanks,

David

There is a reason RW Ploughs are rare...

Doug Evans

>It is fairly well known in collector circles that Rosewood screw-arm ploughs are rare typically due to the difficulty in making threads. Not that they dont exist.

Doug
