Roasting a file

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native in FL. Exile :~(

>Been wanting to get my blacksmith shop up for the longest time, but have made no progress on it except for gathering materials.

Well tonight I finally decided to get on with it none-the-less and put a file in the fireplace to soften?(anneal)

Think I'll attempt to file it into the shape of a nice knife. Don't see why I couldn't also make a chisel this way as well.

Coarse, I've had a softened file now for two years that Todd H. softened for me that I started to file to the shape of a small knife a while back that I've yet to finish.

Un-roasted file

>Forgot to mention after Scott got me side tracked with his reference to last years Superbowl, that the file I put in the fireplace last night still attracts a magnet. Guess it didn't get hot enough, and it was in the coals for a few hours!

Well, I tried, guess I'll have to fire up one of my handcranker forges eh. Yeah, like that breaks my heart. ;~)

>I think that the file will attract a magnet even if it has been properly annealed. The file only looses it's magnetism at the point it is red hot and then as the temp falls the magnetic properties return. I'll have to check this out though.

The magnet

Bob Hackett

>You need to heat to the critical temp, what some term bright cherry red.The steel will no longer attract a magnet when it reaches that temp. After you reach the temp you should hold it at that temp for long enough for the heat to completely soak through the piece.Once you`re sure it`s been hot enough for long enough you cool it slowly, usually by burying it in ashes or lime which act as an insulator.

Once the steel cools to below the critical temp it will attract a magnet again. The test of whether the annealing(softening)of the steel was successful is to try and cut the steel with a file.If it cuts you done good.

DOH!

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native in FL. Exile :~(

>Yup, your right Bob, I knew that. Just took it out to the shop for a few minutes and the teeth file off nicely. Can't believe I forgot that once cooled it would attract a magnet again. Dum de dum dum, dumb
