Re: Brown's auction April 1&2

>I've been to that Event more than once. Clarence Blanchard & Co. and the dealers who attend put on a show that will knock your socks off. It's a lot more than just an auction, with a lot more to see and do than just paw through a few buckets of rust :^). I met Doug and Ben there when they were still working on their first prototype kits. That's also where I got my first chance to try out one of SMT's infills.
The famous Mr. Peabody and Martin J. will probably be there, and you can watch what they bid on and how much they pay for what they win. Just comparing Brown's descriptions to the descriptions in MJD's next catalog is an education in itself.
Note that not everything offered at auction will go for astronomical prices. Even the hoardes of collectors eventually get tired, exhaust their pocket books, and fill up their glass cases, so elegant, old and still perfectly usable tools often go for reasonable prices.
If you want a bench or a really big tool box, don't forget to bring a truck and some beer to entice a few knuckledraggers to help you load it. Todd's observation that these items go at reasonable prices at smaller auctions applies here, as well. It seems I've run into Mrs. Deadhorse at one of these events as well.
For the metalheads among us, Gerstner, Starrett, B&S, et. al., will be well represented. These are not just tools for working wood, but tools for tools for working wood.
It's also a great place to browse and purchase books on hand tools, both usable and collectable. Lots of book dealers are in attendance.
I have a local auction here on Saturday evening that I should attend, but am seriously considering "Sorry, Honey -- Car trouble -- Couldn't make it home in time --Please carry on without me and give my regrets" to make sure I don't miss anything in Harrisburg.
I hope to see you there, Moses. I think I had also better hope Rob hasn't released his new heavy, wide bevel-up smoother by then, so I will have a bit more tool budget available.
