New goodies from Walt today.....

Terry Hatfield

>Howdy everyone,

Mail lady had a heavy package today. I love those.:o)

Big 'ole type 11 #8, #20 square, #61 marking gauge and a #18 bevel....from Brass City!!! Thanks Walt!!!

I got the plane storage revamped for these new guys.......and a couple more from the bay. Nice #5 1/4 and the ever popular 1/2 of a #3 that I just *had* to have. :o)

Everything new and non-plane found a home in the hand tool drawer.

This bunch filled out everything from #3 through #8..well at least the "whole" numbers with the 5 1/4 thrown in and I still have a little...very little room for a couple more.

Thanks for looking. Hope everyone is having a good weekend!!

>You've just gotten bit by the Neanderbug and you've already amassed quite a nice collection of handtools already. GOOD ON YA! :~)

I think that you may have to put some runners in that drawer and put in a sliding half drawer for some smaller items. You'll soon learn that on this side of the Island space will soon be your most valuable commodity.

He's just playing a little catch-up

>because the Normite portion of his shop had such a head start.

Now if you'd get all that power tool cr*p out of the bench and make room for more power tools! A man like you needs a rosewood plow plane with ivory knobs and a full set of blades...

>John,

Ya, I know. I was just thinking earlier that I ought to move some more power tool stuff out and prepare for more hand tools. I guess the bench will be totally hand tools before long. :o)

BTW...when I first read your subject line I thought you were going to say I was trying to catch you. :o) Lord knows I could never do that. You had wayyyyy tooooo much of a head start on me.

Ya I know.....

>Todd,

Well, I've never been accused of half way doing anything or having any patience at all. :o) I figure if I'm going to get into the hand tool deal, I might as well have some good hand tools.

I have enjoyed these planes and such tremendously in the last couple months. There is just something special about an old tool. Makes me smile every time I open the drawer or look at the plane storage. I feel really attached to these tools now. My wife and I were having this discussion a few nites ago and she said "Nobody feels that special attachment to a router like they do to a plane". She is a very wise women.

She is really the plane nut. Her grandfather was a woodworker so she got bitten long before me. She has several old wooden planes etc.. that are her's. Most are pretty rough but she loves them and proudly displays them in our dining room.

There is something very special about hand tools.

Whatchoo talkin' about, Willis?

John K in Hastings, MN

>Why, it's probably been a month since I bought my last plane. Of course, in the mail today I got a very old burl headed mallet, and I'm waiting for another open handled brass backed dovetailing saw to arrive.

Speaking of which, you need a saw till. That poor little dovetail saw just can't live in that bottom drawer, it yearns to be FREE!

>Terry, not sure what part of the country you are in, but this is the auction to go to to add to your collection. I have not been to one yet, but am hoping to be there this time, probably without much cash though ;) It would be fun to see. You can view items at their website I linked below. You just seem to be having a lot of fun with the tools, and this would definitely interst you.

>SCott,

I'll take $2000 for it!!! :o)

I bought that on a whim off the bay. It's someone's home spun version of a chisel/rabbit plane. Half a #3 with the right cheek removed. I just got it yesterday so I haven't had time to do anything with it but I thought it was kinda neat anyway.

Re: Brown's auction April 1&2

William Duffield, on the Cohansey

>I've been to that Event more than once. Clarence Blanchard & Co. and the dealers who attend put on a show that will knock your socks off. It's a lot more than just an auction, with a lot more to see and do than just paw through a few buckets of rust :^). I met Doug and Ben there when they were still working on their first prototype kits. That's also where I got my first chance to try out one of SMT's infills.

The famous Mr. Peabody and Martin J. will probably be there, and you can watch what they bid on and how much they pay for what they win. Just comparing Brown's descriptions to the descriptions in MJD's next catalog is an education in itself.

Note that not everything offered at auction will go for astronomical prices. Even the hoardes of collectors eventually get tired, exhaust their pocket books, and fill up their glass cases, so elegant, old and still perfectly usable tools often go for reasonable prices.

If you want a bench or a really big tool box, don't forget to bring a truck and some beer to entice a few knuckledraggers to help you load it. Todd's observation that these items go at reasonable prices at smaller auctions applies here, as well. It seems I've run into Mrs. Deadhorse at one of these events as well.

For the metalheads among us, Gerstner, Starrett, B&S, et. al., will be well represented. These are not just tools for working wood, but tools for tools for working wood.

It's also a great place to browse and purchase books on hand tools, both usable and collectable. Lots of book dealers are in attendance.

I have a local auction here on Saturday evening that I should attend, but am seriously considering "Sorry, Honey -- Car trouble -- Couldn't make it home in time --Please carry on without me and give my regrets" to make sure I don't miss anything in Harrisburg.

I hope to see you there, Moses. I think I had also better hope Rob hasn't released his new heavy, wide bevel-up smoother by then, so I will have a bit more tool budget available.

>Mike,

Actually.........I saw this little plane creation on the bay and I just had to have it......

It's a #3 that somebody cut in half and removed the right cheek so it could be used for rabbit work etc...thus the #1 1/2 deal. I really haven't had any time to mess with it but I thought it was a cool idea. At least I have something unique. :o)

I'm a bit out of range on that one. I live in Arkansas but I do appreciate the link. I bet it would be one great time!! :o)
