? on custom pricing

Dale Lenz-Tahlequah, OK

>I have an inquire about building a flag case out of birds eye maple. I can figure the "extra cost" for birds eye maple over "normal" lumber.

My concern is over, the degree of difficultly/extra time, working with birds eye maple, I have never worked birds eye maple. I have always heard horror stories of working birds eye, i.e. tear out etc. I do hand plane, joints, and scrape alot of my work.

My question is: How much extra in "percent" would you charge for working bird's eye maple, 15%, 25% etc. Once again, please do not include extra cost of the bird's eye lumber in the extra work involved with bird's eye maple, only the extra work/time involved. I will attach a pic of a walnut flag case if needed for your estimates.

TIA,

Dale

>Dale ... if you have a high angle smoother (York or higher), and keep the throat closed right up, and set the iron for a very shallow cut you shouldn't have a lot of trouble. Giving the timber a coat of 1# cut shellac before planing will help control tear out.

If you don't have the above described plane I'd probably suggest sanding and light scraping. A plane not up to the task can cause a lot of damage that'll take quite a bit of work to correct with sanding and scraping.

Good luck with your project.

BTW - if you plan to dimension the timber with an electron eater (planer) I'd suggest very light passes and wet the surface of the wood before each trip through the cutters.

>Why don't you take some birdseye and try planing it. Practice is always a good thing and it will give you an idea of what you are in store for and what the extra cost will be for your methods of work.

>Wetting the wood has worked very well for me. I do not use water. Mineral spirits is best. It doesn't raise the grain and doesn't rust your tools.
