if there was one power tool I'd give up....

>It would be the Router in a heartbeat.

case in point.

While waiting for Ernie's generous gift of a spokeshave, I was building a keepsake/art/jewelry box.

I had planed down some cherry, glued up a couple of boards for the carcas and I decided to stretch my skills a bit. I wanted to make a sliding dovetail, I notice that the depth changed when I had finished the first pass, so I decide to run over the bit again. The split fence catches on the outfeed side and voila, my nice straight groove now has a hook in mid panel.

*grumble mutter* cut off both side panels equal length and reroute groove with other fence.

Mistakes with the router always happen in such a hurry, not that I'm in a hurry, I always try and be very deliberate when at the router table, or using handheld, but murphy just loves me when I'm using that tool.

Thanks for reading. yes I know I need a full set of planes and I won't need a router as much. ;)

>My 'lectrik routers where the first to go when I got hooked on handtools. Don't miss the noisy, dusty, dangerous things one little iota neither. I'll give 'em their due, they are versitily, but for me that didn't offset there aforementioned short comings.

Still got my tablesaw tho, just can't find it in my heart to let it go. Nothing special, just a '50's Craftsman "100" contractors saw.

>Ned,

Like Todd, my router was the first to go. I didn't kick the cat more than usual; I didn't sneak out in the middle of the night and rout something; I didn't wander over to the neighbor's when I heard his Bosch fire up; I didn't tell everyone I'd gotten rid of all my routers, knowing full well that there was that old JC Penny's router way in the back of that bottom shelf where I could pretend I didn't know it was there...

These days I get to use other tools to do things for which I used to have to murder electrons. Lovable tools In fact, tools that are very much like tribbles: they respond most pleasantly when I caress them; they're lovely to look at; just their appearance invites me to touch them; they seem to find their way to every little nook. But most of all they're like tribbles because they have an astonishing rate of population growth.
