>This morning's mail brought me some interesting literature from John Deere regarding there latest and greatest coating process for bushings called SC2. This is a slurry coating process with " much higher temperature than those commonly usedalong with special atmospheres..".
I thought I would post this here see if any of the metallurgists out there know about this. The metallurgist that developed this process is Dr. Gopal Revankar. Hardness information available shows a scale with silica sand at 800; hardened steel at 600; chrome plating at 1000; and SC2 at 1250. I can scan the article and e-mail it if you want a copy.
>Not sure how this would apply to woodworking tools. I know that they coat drill bits to make them harder, but as soon as you have to sharpen them, the coating is gone and it is back to a normal bit.
>Slurry powder alloy coating is about 1/16" thick. For one side of chisel or plane blade would be outstanding assuming it would take an edge, and theat the edge wouldn't crumble etc.
