Brilliant idea? And questions.

>Ok, more questions and thoughts on my ficticious bench:
First - I can buy an 1 1/2" woodthreading kit for less than $50 bucks, which I am assuming is much less than custom made screws 2" or more in diameter (I tried calling Howard Card, but didn't get anyone, and I'm trying to avoid spending a small fortune here). Is an 1 1/2 screw large enough for a twin screw vise with 20"-22" between the screws? And what would be enough thickness in the jaw - I was thinking 2" or more inches.
And my idea, which may or may not be brilliant. :o) Excuse the stream-of-consciouness line of thinking, but this is just how it went in my head: I'm out in my shop today, playing with my new 28" try plane, not jointer plane - because I ground a large camber in the lovely, old thick iron - thanks to Adam, Dean and others posts in the archives, I think I am begining to understand the huge difference between surfacing planes, and planes used for joinery! But I was mulling over planing operations, with my bench in mind. The crochet seems like a fantastic, very simply assecory to solve one of the operations in hand work - planing the edges of a board. And it avoids so many complications of deciding about which vise to occupy the left corner. But, you need a vertical load path with the crochet, and as I've read and asked questions, this is accomplish on a French bench or the like, with holdfasts in the legs, and/or/with a board jack. I'm also thinking about a sticking board at the same time, and this was my thought:
Landis showed Terule's bench with a 2x4 spanning the two legs of his Roubo, with holdfasts, to accomodate boards that would not reach the second leg of his bench - his solution to a board jack. What if I skip the board jack, and make a sticking board, with two pegs in the bottom side. Then, drill holes in the legs, and turn the sticking board on its side, and use it to span the two legs of my bench, for use with the crochet as my vertical load path? Am I just being confusing? Then drill two holes for the same pegs in the top of my bench, and use the sticking board for planing mouldings as usual. I'll try a picture of my thoughts - let me know what you guys think, I was intruiged with the thought of combining two assecories of my bench, into one.
