Help with LV shoulder plane purchase

Wes Billups

>I was hoping you guys could help me out with a question regarding the purchase of a LV shoulder plane. I have been eyeing both the medium and large versions and even had them on my wish list prior to Christmas. Well as luck would have it, the only item I received from my wish list is the brass replacement knobs for the large plane. Since I can only afford one right now should I go ahead and get the large one since I have the knobs or just buy the medium plane and plan on getting the large one once more funds become available.

Thanks,

Wes

>If you do lots of boxes and small pieces the medium size is just right. It falls short on the longer tenons and bigger joints like furniture and large case work. I have the medium and it does just about everything for me. I wish I had the large version (on my wish list) for some projects. Choose based on what you build most of the time and wait till next Christmas/birthday/Valentine's Day (the gift that shows you'd marry him all over again) Eric

If you get the medium keep the knobs to justify getting a shoulder plane to fit them later;-)

>Wes -

I hate to say it... but bummer gift..! You can't have had much fun with those on Christmas morning... :)

OK - it's the thought that counts...

If you end up ordering the Medium - we'll credit you for the knobs...

Cheers -

I was about to suggest that...

Christopher Fitch @ Memphis

>you use the knobs as an excuse to get the large later on and get the medium now.

Now you have an even bigger excuse...

:)

Could be worse - he could have a LA Jack with no HA blade....

Oh yeah...

Christopher Fitch @ Memphis

>Rob, I'll get a HA blade for the Low Angle Jack when I graduate to exotic hardwoods with curly or Squirrely grains.

I'm still in the first grade of woods: pine, poplar, oak, cherry, walnut...

:)

Now my uncle is a different matter...but then not everyone has a friend who works for one of the largest mahogany importers in the US. My uncle was whining (actually he was taunting) about how curly the grain was in a piece of mahogany he was planing last night.

>I really did appreciate the thought. I was just using the wish list for my own purposes and my wife found the link and thought it would be fun to surprise me with some tools. She generally stays away from buying tools for me as she says I'm too picky and she can never get the right item.

Anyway I believe I'll get the medium shoulder plane and just wait on the larger plane. I need it mostly for truing shoulders and I really want to try it out on cleaning dadoes. Hopefully then at a later time I can convince her I need the larger shoulder plane because I already have the knobs.

Thanks to everyone,

Wes

Funny you should mention that...

Frank Mutchler in Colorado Springs

>I stared at my HA blade for over a month until my LA Jack arrived ;>) The blade just sat there and seemed to be taunting me and so I covered it up with a stack of papers on my computer desk. Couldn't find it for two days after the plane arrived!

>Happens all the time. I had the wooden knob for the LAAMBP for a couple weeks before the plane itself arrived. I knew better than to take it out to the shop. Instead, I let the mouse push it around right here.
