It looks like you had a great day in the shop. What a joy to be able to spend some time with your grandchildren. Thanks for posting.

>Howdy Matti!

I thought that "beep beep" was gonna be prelude to claiming a drive-by gloat and I was gonna tell you that was no 'drive-by'. That's one of the purest, sweetest gloats I've seen in a long while. Only problem is he's gonna want to make something in Opa's (what is Finnish for "Opa"?) shop every time he comes over now. What a sly devil you are!

Finnish for opa (which I thought was german) is "vaari" but we live in a town with a swedish speaking finnish minority so it's common to call grandfather "pappa". The boy Aki is actually my wifes (for over 20 years) grandson from her first marriage. When he was about two and a half years old, we tried to explain the fact to him. So one day when we were fetching him from his day care center with her mother (my wifes daughter), I was chatting with him in the yard and one of the other inmates asked if I was Aki's pappa. I was rather proud when Aki told him adamantly that:"He's not my pappa, he's my PAL!" After that we have been on first name basis.

Nicely chosen project - quick enough to gratify, simple enough for him to figure out how to do, and satisfying.

When our older son was about that age, he and I made a little wagon for his little (then about a year) brother - a simple box about the size of a book with wheels on each corner. I couldn't tell which one was more excited when it was done, Michael (the older) for having Made Something, or Muir (the younger) for having a cool little toy his brother had made for him.

Did you make them a kid-sized bench?

>Howdy Matti,

You are indeed a lucky man to have a grandson (even if you had to marry Grandma to get him ) who calls you his "Pal". Of course, spending time in the shop with him showing him how to make things while having so much fun is the best way to make a pal.

Yes, "Opa" is german in origin but we hear it a lot here in Texas due to the large influx of immigrants from Germany about a hundred and fifty years ago. There are a lot of Czech's in this area, too.

I guess we in The States are such a melting pot that we have come to expect to hear a mix of family heritage habits of speech. Spanish is a MAJOR influence now, probably as much -- or more than -- it was when Texas became a republic by overthrowing Mexican rule in 1836. Remember the Alamo! (Heck, I can drive a coupla hours and visit it! I don't hafta remember it.)

Keep having fun with those kids!

>Wonderful pictures, Matti! You are surely blessed and and fortunate to have such fine 'pals'! I'm reading this just before bed time and want to thank you for a great sleeping pill!

Between your pictures and the pictures of the joyful Iraqis people I count myself blessed to live in such beautiful times. Thanks again for sharing ;>)
