>I realize this is no Wayne Anderson block plane, but it was fun working the hickory and osage orange into something to whack with. So fun I made eight mallets.
The handle tenon is flared and has four shoulders, so the laminated head has absolutely nowhere to go. I amy refine the handle as I get time with it, but so far so good.
You've got nothing to be ashamed of there Buckaroo. comparing your work to Wayne's is definately comparing apples to oranges as Wayne works metal and you with wood. I think they are very nice mallets, now if you wanna see a crude mallet you should see the one that Erni, er, er, I made. ;~)
I see that you have angled the faces, how do they work? Have you experimented with different angles?
>My prototype had too sharp an angle. I found 5 degrees to be ideal and consider it an important and successful part of the design. I think almost all commercial beech (ugh, sniff) mallets have a similar feature.
No Scott, I did not turn the round Sapadilla one. Once I get a motor on the lathe though, look out!
>Very nice mallets. The one on the right looks exactly like the black locust from around here though? Either way, it is a very tough wood, but easy to work with.
>Something caused another picture to be uploaded over top of Tom's mallets. Warning: not for the squeamish Neanderthal, it's a photo of a turning, but not a mallet or a tool handle :^)
>I see what is happening, but am not sure what to do. It is going to be an ongoing problem for awhile as far as I can see. What happened is that when you upload a picture to the server from your hard drive, it renames it to a name that contains the message number. Right now, the turning board and the handtool boards are at the same numbers, so a new upload overwrites the one that is there. Will have to talk to Ellis about this one.
>You probably need to redo the numbering scheme. Instead of numbering each board separately, try a global that encompasses all boards. So msg 1 could be hand tools, 2 turning, 3 main msg, etc.
>That would be one way, but I am not sure if the current structure of the boards and the scripts that create them can do that. From what little I know about the boards, I think that might take a fairly major rewrite, but not sure.
>I have been known to confuse locust with osaage but in this case they are both osage orange. The mallet on the left has one coat of Tried and True original on it, giving the darker hue.
I agree that either black or honey locust would make a fine osage substitute for a mallet.
>Maybe, depends on the underlying database structure. This type numbering scheme, one split among several categories, is a typical mistake made by inexperience. The remedy does take some reprogramming, but not nearly so significant as trying to solve it some other way, such as using a prefix based on category or assigning each category a range of numbers. In other words, beginners tend to think categories are significant, whereas experienced database developers know that everything should be data driven.
How about just assigning a prefix, depending on which board the picture was uploaded to? That way, the message number is just part of the file name. That way you don't have to renumber messages: if messages has prefix 'a', hand tools has prefix 'b', and turning has prefix 'c', then a123, b123, and c123 can each have a picture.
>Not sure, but I think that the boards use separate databases. I know what you are talking about on the databases, I have been involved with programing in one form or another (including some database design, although not extensive) for a bit over 30 years now;-) I have probably been bitten by most any error it is possible to make. (and a few that are not possible, but happened anyway;-))
I am not sure what would be involved in changing any of it as I don't know the complete structure of the boards or the scripts that run them. It does look like something that is going to have to be modified.
>WOW! That looks exactly like the locust from here. I never saw a finished piece of osage orange, though. I could use locust as a substitute I guess. Thanks
