>I got an absolutely beautiful piece of apple to make some saw handles out of. :) At the breakfast earlier this month talk came around to old saws and the subject of apple for handles came up. Jim offered to send me a piece for free. (Hoping Jim doesn't get mobbed by requests for free apple.)

Now, if I can just keep it out of my wife's hands long enough to actually turn it into saw handles. She's not a woodworker - but she loves figured or crazy grained wood or wood with pretty colors or spalted wood or .......... I suspect you get the picture. :)

>Well, the handles are in line behind a few other projects - so it may be a while. I rehandled a Harvey Peace back saw a while back and although the handle came out okay - I'd just like to see it in apple instead of soft maple. I have another Disston back saw that could use a new handle as well. (Doesn't *need* it - just could use it.) But I'll post some pictures when I get to it.

If you haven't met Jim, make a point to do so.

I have a similar Jim C. story

Wiley Horne--Glendora CA

>involving a 3/8" sidebead, the plane plus detailed sharpening and fettling instruction. That sidebead was my entry into molding planes. That first experience has now morphed into a whole new slope to slide down and swim around in the lake at the bottom.

And it all started with a single act of kindness.

Thanks Jim Crammond.

>Jim really is a nice guy. I *have* to say that about anyone that gives me a beautiful piece of apple. :) I really enjoyed meeting and talking to him. Actually, however belated, I really enjoyed meeting everyone at the breakfast. Everyone is as nice in person as they are here.
