Plane with diamond logo?

Ernie Miller Topeka

>Who makes this plane? it is in a box lot at an internet auction not e-bay opening bid is $10 comes with a 110, war time bailey #5 bailey #6 body and a rusty 78. if my only proffet is in the #5 then it might not be worth the $10 in gas to go pick it up. so what do you all say is it worth $1 to list it? I have blades and levercaps so I can make a frankin plane out of it.

>Hi Ernie:

It could be a National. Is the Diamond fairly wide with the words "NATIONAL" inside a diamond at the top of the iron (the impression was usually faint). If so, it was likely made in Hamilton, Ontario (I think by RAE). There was also a National version of the Emmert "Turtle-back". I know national did that little twist at the top of the lateral adjuster and the spur on their totes was a little thin and agricultural.

Shapliegh Diamond Edge

Roger Nixon

>This looks like a Shapliegh Diamond Edge plane, probably made by Stanley. Diamond Edge used a diamond logo with DE inside it and an arrow going though the diamond. It also appears the rear tote is gutta percha which was used by DE on some of their planes.

>Its a natural hard rubber like substance. Comes from some type of tree whose name escapes me at the moment. They made golf balls out of it in the late 1800s.
