Possible record and thanks Joel

Wiley Horne--Glendora CA

>Today at noon PST I punched in an online order to Joel at Tools for Working Wood. The confirm came back by email immediately, which is not unusual. And then, in less than an hour, I received a Shipping Notice (Fedex) and a tracking number. Shipping an hour after order placement is unusual, isn't it?

The way fast shipping was not all that important to me. But it made me know that the folks at Tools for Working Wood are taking care of business, and I won't forget that. Other times, I have called my order in just to chat, and have gotten great advice (which saved me from a mistake).

Thanks, Wiley

>Yeah, Joel's service is great. The last order I placed with him landed on my back porch well under 24 hours after I hung up the phone. Of course, NJ is a bit closer to NY than California, so YMMV.

>Hi Bill,

Three items:

--Auriou Modeller's Rasp...14 grain, 200mm, left handed

--Multiple point diamond dresser for grindstones.

--Three Cherries card scraper

Joel special ordered these left-handed Auriou's for nuts like me. And yeah, there is a difference which you can feel, and see (I looked). The diamond point dresser will be very welcome as I am a big fan of hollow grinding chisel and plane blades. The card scraper was a straight impulse item.

Congratulations on the Eagles!

Left Handed Rasp?

Bill Murphy/Reading,PA.

>Wiley,

That makes sense. They must cut down and to the left? Being right handed, I never thought about that.

Three Cherries scraper, is that the left handed version of the Two Cherries scraper? LOL

>Bill,

You got me chuckling. There's a lot of left-handed folks using rasps and doing just fine. So it's not that big a deal.

But. If you're gonna pay for hand made, you may as well get the benefit of it. The worker hand-stitching a rasp doesn't care if they angle the teeth one way or the other, so they do it to suit the customer. They mark the left-handed ones 'G', for 'gauche'. Clark & Williams is another example--when Bill Clark makes the mortise for the tote on a jointer or trying plane, he will offset it a bit one way or the other according to whether the user is left- or right-handed. Larry Williams will make your hollows and rounds right or left handed. Konrad Sauer makes his infill totes to fit your hand.

Back to the rasps. I have right-handed Auriou's. They work just fine if I change the angle of attack. For example, a left-handed Grain 13 held in a natural skew (Joel illustrates this on his site) cuts a smooth surface. A right-handed Grain 13 held the same way will cut deep parallel furrows--I need to hold it unskewed to get the correct action. So it ain't that big a deal, but if both L and R are offered, may as well get the best one.

The Three Cherries is me having a senior moment. CRS is my other all-purpose excuse, but doesn't fit as well here.

>That Joel fella got some of my bucks for an 8" left handed modelers rasp and a flat rasp on Monday afternoon. I'm sure interested to see how well they work. I'm just might see them when I get home tonite if the snow doesn't slow deliveries.

>My order took about 3 days! Now I did place it on a Sunday over the 'net and opted for the cheap bas.. er economical, yeah that's it, economical shipping.

Seriously, the order was filled quickly and accurately and arrived well on schedule.

>After discussing these implements of destruction last night on the Hand Tool Chat, and then reading joel's explanation of rasp-handedness, I gotten to thinking about my mostly conquered dyslexia and what I've had to learn, mostly subconsciously, to effectively use some of my rasps and files. And then I thought about the myriad workbenches I have used, some with left and some with right shoulder vises. And then, there are the L-N #140 temptations. Now I find myself on the horns of yet another dilemma: Were I to add an Auriou gauch rasp to my arsenal, would I have to retrain myself to make effective use of it? Would I have to dispose of all my desterously cut files. Would I make better use of a straight or a curved modelmaker's rasp? Is the proverbial Dilemma beastie horned with a pair of these curved weapons, one dexter and one sinister?

Stop!!! I can't take any more of this! I still don't have all the planes I really need. I don't have all the chisels, or all the carving gouges, or all the braces, or the marking gauges, or even the chisels, or the saws, or the planes, or even........

I think I'm going to go buy a bigger routah and some more bits. That should cure me.
