removing lacquer from new chisels

>I need some help and I know that some one on the board can answer my question with out breaking a sweat.
For my birthday I was given a set of Hirsch firmer chisels from LV. I realize that they come coated with lacquer and that to begin tuning them up for use I have to remove the lacquer. I went out and bought some highly toxic lacquer thinner for the job, which leads me to my question. Do I soak the chisels in the thinner over night or can some vigorous rubbing with a cloth soaked in thinner do the job. If I have to go the soaking route, can I leave the container of thinner outside in the cold (with temps in the 20c) as my work shop is a tiny storage locker with no ventilation? I am worried that the liquid will freeze and I will not be able to thaw it out until spring.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am in the process of building a small side table and I am learning a lot about my hand tools through trial and error. Thankfully I am working with pine so my mistakes are not so expensive!
