? on weaving fiber rush chair seats

Dave Mount

>I've woven several fiber rush chair seats now. Symmetry and evenness of the weave have improved, but there's on thing I still struggle with. The sources I've consulted suggest inserting triangles/trapezoids of cardboard to each quadrant of the weave as filler to stiffen the seats (if you're using real rush, then that's the stuffing). Anyway, not matter what, it seems like each seat ends up with just a spot or two where there's a slight separation in the weave and you can see the cardboard through the gap. I hate that.

So my question is, what would happen if I just left the cardboard out? Would the seat be too soft or otherwise undesirable? Any other suggestions? (don't say weave tighter -- my hands won't take it!)

TIA,

Dave

No stinkin' cardboard

Jim Reed @Tallahassee

>I reworked an antique one time that was stuffed with pinestraw! I would leave the cardboard out. Over time, the seat will settle and will be just fine. IMO, cardboard inside serves no purpose and is visually distracting. (ps, the reason natural rush seats look so tight is that the rush is put on wet and tightens as it dries.) Good luck.
