New (well, old) Planes

Mark B Smith

>I visited my local "reseller" on Friday. Came home with 4 new purchases.

Stanley #4, type 15.

Stanley #5C, type 12

Stanley #605 1/2 C (not sure how old)

Stanley #80

$56 for all 4. All have little or no rust on the soles, but some tote and knob damage. Can't wait to start cleaning them up.

Had to pass up a nice 608 for lack of storage space.

>You buy them and resail them to pay for the ones you keep. now go back and get it.

>Mark, let me make sure I heard this right...did you say...605 1/2?? And there's an 608 kicking around too??...And that first batch cost you the princely sum of $56? STORAGE SPACE!!!...This has got to be one of the best gloats I've heard in a long time...I'd get yer rear back there and pick up that 608...PRONTO!! While your there better check under his tables for more of those 60XXX's. And, by the way, you most definately suck! :-)

Bedrock Type Study

David Miller from Iowa

>Noticed you don't have an email adress posted, it would be handier. As an FYI, here's a Bedrock Type study I paraphrased from Bob Kaune's published one and that I keep in my PDA (along with my have and have not list).

Stanley Bedrock Type Study

Type 1, 1898 - single digit body numbers (no 600s), milled space below APR. 2, 06, 2 dates on lateral, 10-21-84 and 7-24-88.

Type 2, 1898-1899 - Only one date 7-24-88 on lateral

Type 2A, 1899 - add 600 series numbering

Type 3, 1900-1908 - 600 series but no milled out space below APR. 2, 06

Type 4, 1908-1901 - add Bed Rock SR&L to lever caps, lose lateral patent dates

Type 6, 1912-1921 - lever caps just say BED ROCK

Type 6a, 1922 - large frog adjustment wheel

>I agree completely. I should have been more clear about storage. I was on my motorcycle, and the 608 is such a monster I didn't think I could get home without it falling off (return trip was about 60 miles). The 4 that I purchased already were a big weight in my backpack. I'll bring my saddlebags next time.

>Thank you! I ran right out and looked. It looks to be a type 7 - 2 patent dates behind the frog.
