BURR!!! A good day to be in the shop..pics...

Terry Hatfield

>Howdy everyone,

Well, that big 'ole No.7 not having a home got solved today. I went out to the shop this morning armed with a bunch of pictures I printed of other folk's plane storage ideas to try and figure it out. I did'nt have a clue what I was going to do for more storage but I was determined to figure out something that would be fairly easy, cost zero and allow for expansion in the future.

I think I came up with a pretty good solution. The back of the bench has 4 doors. The center ones are right behind the drawers on the front so there was about 11" of room left over that I put an adjustable shelf in when I first built the bench. I used the area to store finishing supplies, glue etc...

I emptied all that stuff out of the bench and jambed it onto other shelves leaving this pretty good sized hole.

I used a scrap piece of 3/4" white oak ply to build an angled back for the left over hole. It's tilted back at a 15 deg. angle but the planes smaller than No.5 seemed a bit unstable to me. I thought about making cleats as others have done but I happened to remember that I had some 1/2" rare earth magents!!! I drilled holes 1" below the end of the toes of the No.3, No.4 and LA block and epoxyed the magnets in the holes so they are barely proud of the base. They worked great!!! They have just enough pull for the planes to be vey stable yet not so much that you have to wrestle them out. You can see them in this pic.

And here is the done deal. I still have some room left for more goodies!!! The smaller planes could be stacked if need be in the future. The dividers are attached with a few 5/8" brads so they can come out easily too.

Obviously I had to revamp the insert in the drawer where the planes were while I was at it. :D All the planes except for the newly aquired No. 7 were in here originally. I really wanted my chisles in this drawer anyway. :D I built a little divided box to hold them. I actually have expansion room in here now too!!!!

All in all a good day in the shop.

Thanks for looking!!!

Terry

The continuously evolving shop

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>You're being wise, using easily-moved dividers. I suspect that shop design eventually settles down, as experimentation shows what goes best where, but it's a long process. My father built extra storage under his Shopsmith in his 80's, in a shop he'd been in for probably 45 years by then.

Digression: I can never remember seeing the top of his bench. There's some discussion, now that he's gone, of my brother and my cleaning up the garage this Spring - I'll be interested to see what we find on and under the bench. Oddly, I have the same problem with my bench.

>Bill,

I've redone this plane storage deal twice in a month!! :o)

I've been redoing my shop since the first wwing tool got in there. Your words "continuously evolving" is about a well as I have ever seen it put. I'm always thinking of some way to change something to make it better. I have as much fun working "on" the shop as I do working "in" it.

BTW...The first pic showing the top of the bench in my post is old. I didn't show the top of my bench in the pics from today because it was piled up big time!!! :o)

Looks Good Terry,

>Terry - one of the neatest workspaces I think that I've seen in a while - wish I was that organised and methodical in my approach.

What are you planning of using as a handle on the file? Would you turn one up or just use a shop bought one?

Cheers,

Andrew

>Atta Go Terry,

That is one organized shop. I am envious. Apparently my wife wants her house renovated before my shop gets renovated.

Just yesterday I had to hang my #8 beside my cabinet. No room in it right now. Never thought I would own a#8 but there it was.

>Andrew,

Thanks. Actually that file is from the LV scraper sharpening set. I goes in a 90 degree holder to get a new square edge on the scraper so it doesn't need a handle. If it did, I would at least attempt to turn one. Turing is not my strong suit.

>Mike,

The pic showing the floor is an old one. It was not nearly as clean today. I swept the worst of the plane shavings into a pile and used them to start a fire this morning. I carefully avoided showin the shop in today's pics. I would ruin my reputation!!! :o)

BTW...the shop is usually cleaner than my dining room too. Teenagers are a messy lot!! :o)

Hey! I resemble that remark...

Scott Burr in Ben Lomond,CA

>I guess I was wrong; it wasn't a till in your future. I see a well organized solution with lots of room for growth too! I must say a job well done. Whats next on the list? Do I see No8, a block plane or something more specialized?

Now about that shop space, look bigger than my house and cleaner too. Get ye butt out there and make a mess! Shaving that is

Looking good.

That happens to me too......

>Scott,

Thanks.

Not sure on the next purchase. Most likely shoulder or rabbit plane. I better cool it for a while before I get to join the tools in the shop!! LOML has been very understanding of this new addiction so far but you never know when she might change her mind. :o)
