Japanning Alternatives *LINK*

>I've got a few old Stanley planes and scrapers that are good users but have little or no original japanning left and I'm interested in getting some form of original looking finish on them. Bear in mind that these are *users* and that several of them were already painted black (poorly) when I got them.
I originally started looking for japanning formulations but I'm not sure I want to go that route. I found the information at http://www.cranialstorage.com/wood/html/japanning.html to be fairly useful and looks like it would work but it seems to be a lot of trouble. Then I started thinking about *durable* finishes and remembered that I finished some automotive related undercarriage parts with a product called POR-15. This stuff is seriously durable and is significantly easier to apply than a japanning formulation. The only drawback I can think of (other than it isn't original) is that it is basically permanent (I've been haunted by a drip that hit some concrete outside for about 8 years now). I've generally used the stuff as an alternative to powder coating (could also work for planes?).
I figure someone else might have thought of this stuff before and there may be a reason I don't want to use it, so before I go and order a can....
