Different Bed Rock

Todd Hughes

>Picked up this plane last week and thought you might enjot seeing it. Is a rather different Bed Rock being a type one which was only made for part of the first year in 1898.These early Bed Rocks are numbered the same as the regular Stanley Baileys and don't have a 60 prefix. this plane is just marked No.8. It is a corrugated plane,[even more rare!] but still is just marked No. 8 and not 8C wich is correct. Also they have a milled out spot on the bed where the patent date of sept. 3 used to be.I have another type 1 and it was done after it was jappaned which apparently how most were done but on this 8 it was jappaned over the milled out spot.Even though this plane is over 105 years old it is in near mint condition.Has about 98% of it's original jappaning and the blade looks like it was only lightly honed. No rusting and looked like the plane was stored with a heavy oil covering and maybe only used once or twice. Beautiful original wood that is perfect......Was funny because at the auction where i got it they hadn't put it out in the morning, was talking to a friend and he told me about a painting he wanted which we went to look at and there the plane was setting next to it.Had looked on the table earlier and it wasn't there.Pretty exciting. At first I thought I would buy it to sell, is a rather vaulable plane i think, but more I looked at it the more I decided that I would be buying it for me.An older , uncommon plane in wonderful condition...well I got lots of other stuff to sell. Only thing no room for it in my kitchen tool cabinet so I moved my collection of dough scrapers off the top and it sets there nicely now.......Todd , who thought at $30 he did pretty OK

>YOU SUCK! Were early Stanleys marked with a "C" when they were corrugated? I've never seen one marked as such. Nice score BTW.

>Todd,

In my experience the early Bedrock's were more often corrugated than not. A smooth bottomed type 1 608 would be rarer I think. Still at $30, that's an incredible buy.
