Bought Wood Did Good?

Todd Hughes

>Saw at my wed. auction today some Basswood. 8 pieces , 6 were about 4x8 x 30 in. , two were about twice as thick. I've been thinking about carving some masks and figured this stuff might be what I want. Pulled it out and put it with some old hardware,a neat brass casting kit, and a wrought iron wagon tongue. come back and this old guy has pulled the wood out.Now this ain't how it is supposed to be done as you can only pull one thing out of a pile that is already pulled out. Thought about it but didn't say anything .This guy I know is a wood carver, out bid him more then once on some chisels and I don't think he bids very high. Anyway I got all the wood for $25 which i was pretty happy with. My wood working friend tells me "Man that old guy ran you, bass wood is cheap and you could of got it for less at a shop" Bothered me a bit but I think my friend is mistaken. Later we saw a bunch of Mahogany boards which my friend got for $5 ,[no old guy and lots of snow] Dang I was all ready to tell him he paid to much but really couldn't! As I helped him load it he took great pleasure in pointing out that he got about 4 times as much Mahogany then I did basswood and paid lots less.....So just what does bass wood cost?......Todd

>IIRC, out here, retail it's less than $4.00 a BF.

Might even be $2/BF, but can't recall for sure.

Cheers,

>Hi Todd -

Checked down my way and we have two boutiequie-type lumber sellers: one list 16/4 basswood for $4.36 / BF and the other for $5.90. So I think you did pretty well :-)

>BTW-If you`re carving masks mahogany will do just about as well as basswood, even better if the pieces are to be put outside.

Mahogany is what all the carvers up here use for marine use. Those fancy carvings on the stern or in the cockpits or on deck on those yachts, most likely mahogany.

>Thick wood for carving I think might be harder to find than 4/4 or 8/4, and is a lot more expensive. I think you would do pretty well with those on ebay sold to carvers, but am not the expert on carving.
