Maker's mark stamp?

Maker's mark stamp?

Ted Shuck, Centennial, CO

>I know this has come up before, but I thought I would try to glean a little more information. LOML thinks I need a maker's mark stamp to mark wooden items that I have been making.

I found a reference to MicroStamp in the archives here and found a Harper Manufacturing company through a Google search. Both these companies make steel stamps as opposed to brass branding irons. I don't like the idea of burning one of those rare projects that I have actually finished!

Harper Manufacturing seems to make stamps in a wide range of sizes. I am not sure if MicroStamp makes stamps large enough (for me) to see with the naked eye. I would like something with my name on it where the letters are about 3/16" high, similar to an old owner's mark found on wooden planes.

Any input on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ted

>I got my maker's mark from Mazzaglia Tools. Contact info is on the Electronic Neanderthal. It was around $30. They also sell molding plane blanks if you need them. Ask for their brochure. There are four makers marks shown: mine, Tod Herrli's, Scott Posts and another one.

Here are two of Scott Post's:

>I've made more then a couple stamps. Here are 3. Made them out of old scrap concrete bits and cold chisels I found laying in the dirt using nothing more then files, an engraving tool/chisel made out of a broken file and a small hammer.Don't think it took more then 15 min. or so to make any of them.....Todd

>Todd,

So do you work the designs hot or cold with your chisel-made-from-a-file?

Me, I got me one of those Mazzaglia Tools stamps, but a touch mark would be nice too.

>I forge the stamp to size and then anneal and cut the design in with it cold. I harden and temper them but probably not needed if used on wood . Don't know how many 100's of axes I stamped with the heart one....Todd

>Russ,

I wrote to Mazzaglia Tools and just heard back today. They sent me the brochure and, sure enough, your maker's mark is in there.

They have moved to New Hampshire. The new address is:

Mazzaglia Tools

12 Palmer St.

Salem, NH 03079

The 1/16" letter stamp is $25, and the 1/8" letter stamp is $35. The stamps can be made with from 4 to 15 characters. The zig zag border adds $5 to the cost. Two line stamps like yours are $37.

I am ordering one.

Thanks for the reference,

Ted

>Ted,

I noticed that the address had changed in the most recent Gristmill (mwtca quarterly publication). I'm glad to hear the old address still worked.

It's probably worth mentioning to the group that the brochure also lists plane makers floats and molding plane iron blanks. My brochure is a couple years old so I'm hesitant to quote prices (it says Catalog #6 on the cover).

>I think my catalog was #10. I don't have it in front of me now. The old address worked, but seemed to take a while to get there.

The planemaker's floats are $50 each, as I remember.

The plane iron blanks are special order and prices are not listed.

He has some special piano maker's chisels with a square crosssection which are around $50 to $100 depending on the size. I'm not sure what makes these so special???

Ted
