And...

The issue now is getting caught up on what we have (or don't) right now...

Today we took delivery of a new machining center - I'm on my way to see it now....

Rob, all of the planes look great and will look even better in my collection.

Paul M. in San Diego

>Hi Rob,

I was surprised to see non-machined sides on the jointer. This makes perfect sense on the other two planes, but I shoot with my jointer pretty often. It's very useful to have a long plane with square sides when shooting the edges of veneer to get them perfectly straight and square before taping.

Not a criticism, but just expressing surprise. I'm sure this cuts down costs significantly by not machining the edges for those who don't want to use it for shooting.

Rob Lee

>Hi Paul -

It's not just for cost reasons - there are a number of other decisions sitting behind the choices, that I just can't really go into...

Beside, we figure all the shooting any one will want to do can be done with the jack...

>Great coming lineup. On the jointer, does that little brass knob right behind the wood knob in front allow the throat opening to be adjusted? If so, that's one up on what L-N is offering.

I think some ergonomics are changing a bit too.

I think that's all I know about.

Rob explained it...

Hoa Dinh in Alameda

>in one of his posts here: no side dimples (use the LA jack for shooting), wider (to share the same blade with the current LA jack and the future LA jointer), a bit heavier.

Scrub, hooray!

Clay Home

>I had no idea a scrub was coming - I've been hunting for a reasonable #40 on eBay, even bid on one or two horned scrubs in desperation ... now I think I will juuust wait.

Good choice!

Yes - that's to adjust the throat. We'll also have the throat adjustment knob as the LA jack does...

Note that these images are still early renderings - the knob is actually lower and wider than shown....

>Hi Aaron -

A number of small, but important changes...

It heavier (4 lb 14oz - vs 3lb 10oz, same blade width as the LA Jack, and LA jointer, the handle has moved a bit further back from the mouth, the handle shape has been slightly changed....

Type 3 by my count...

Brad in Ottawa

>On the clearance shelf I bought the display model that would be Type 1...

Type 1 No mouth adjustment screw/stop

Type 2 Mouth adjustment screw/stop

I'm not sure it would count as a type given that it's dimensions have changed though. I hope that the type 1's are worth considerably more in the collector market! :)

Re: Keeping with Stanley

Rob Lee

>Hi Dan -

Nope - still two different planes...the first LA smooth has sides for shooting, the second doesn't...and there's a diffenec in blade widths..

Definitely more a "4 to 4 1/2" relation, than a type relation.... (or, a 164 to 164 1/2 H)

Re: Type 3 by my count...

Rob Lee

>Hi Brad -

Actually - there is a type 3 for this plane...nor one's got one yet... the mold was changed slightly a while ago, but we haven't worked through the stock of castings yet... no will we for awhile yet...

We are keeping track of "types" and production quantities though...so 100 years from now, you'll be able to see how rare any given plane is.... 'course right now - that's competitive information....:)

>Hey, Rob! Watching that absolutely fabulous Canadian show, "How its made" (which I am horribly addicted to) last night, makes me think: Making of a plane, or some other items LV makes, would be perfect. You should contact the producer; they are QC I think (lotta QC companies). Great publicity, great education, great entertainment and I'll sell bootleg copies. Oh, ok, maybe you could trade rights to put it on your DVD's in return for access. They actually do some pretty sensitive processes and can respect you trade information well,I think.

Commentary's a bit hokey at times - but who doesn't like seeing stuff being made?

It the adult version of "Builder Bob"!

C'mon - we wouldn't have the nerve to charge for something like that....

Good idea - we do have a plane MFG tour in pictures for presentations...will see if we can do something with that....
