Old Widow Women
Todd Hughes
>While back my friend Joe Rut told about an older woman he met up in Phila whose Husband was a BookBinder befor he died.Joe had gone up with a friend of his that is into print making to buy some stuff she was selling.Told me she had a house full of stuff and had to sell because she wanted to move into a smaller house.Said it was to much stuff to really know what she had but he had seen a box of lots of wooden molding planes and she told him he could have them for $90.Instead he bought a huge shoe buffing machine and some etc. including a framed Manscript page from the 1400's or older.I told him lets plan on making a trip up north and yesterday we did.Left the house about 5:30 and got there about 8:30 after seeing more of Phila then I wanted.Joe thought we were late but woman thought we were early and she was still in her PJs but took us into the basement and turned us loose while she got dressed.Saw the box of wood planes but nothing special and someone had put price stickers on all of them at $35....way more then what i would pay, began to think this was going to be a wash . Did see a mostly complete 55 and a 112 scraper.I looked around and under a bunch of paper in the corner I see the corner of a large wooden tool box, open it up and boy it was loaded.Started pulling tools out and stacking them on the floor and soon had a BIG pile.Added the 55 and the 112 and 3 boxes of letter stamps out of a cabinet near by,[must have been 40 boxes of them] and soon the lady came back down all dressed up.Did my best impersonation of Eddie Haskel complimenting her on jewelery etc. turning my normal charm up a notch.Looked like it worked.Went over to Joes loot mostly a box of many large wood tapes and dies she checked them out and asked what they were for.Joe said making points on sticks[geezz!] I told here it is for making threads in wood and showed her a nearby clap rod. She quized Joe for a while on what he would give and went back and forth befor going with $25....Came over to me and she picked the pile all apart looking at everything then picked two big chisels off the top and told me should would like to keep them "to scrape things". I really Hate to make an offer on anything I am buying and I was sure she was going to ask me esp. after how she delt with Joe.I was going to say $250 but she stood up and asked"How about $100?" I told her sounds fair and peeled off a C note right quick. Then asked her what she wanted for the chest and the rest of the tools in it ,mostly tongs, wooden handle augers and etc.Thought it would make it easier to carry everything. She said $75 ..too much for me on somthing I didn't really want but I offered her $50 but she said she think about it. Got a few cardbord boxes and loaded up after Joe bought a Fordom machine he found[$20]. Looked over and the old woman has a big box full of tools that had to weigh 50 lbs and is trying to carry it up the steps for me! Had to yell at her to put it down and don't do that again.Gave her the 3 boxes of number stamps that didn't weigh much.Went upstairs and Joe bought some 19th cent. Maps and prints on the cheep and I got a few bookbinding tools but most of those she didn't want to sell....this time. Talked with her and joked around some befor loading up the brute of a shoe buffer,[huge and had to weigh 400lb.] Woman tried to grab the back and had to yell at her again.Befor leaving I nailed down a loose step going down into the basement for her that I had seen was loose and almost fell on.She thanked us for everything and told us to come back after she digs out some more stuff ...We left and went to the Mercer Museum which was great,[another story]....Haven't really sorted the junk out yet but a quick go though looks like I got....over 2 dozen Chisels mostly BIG framing chisels but couple everlasts and smaller bench and carving chisels, the 55,112,80 and a rare 63 low angle plane.Half Dozen spoke shaves including a MF cigar shave and a real unusual looking round shave, some NIB Starret stuff, the 3 boxes of letter stamps inc. 2 with old english fonts,[never seen that befor]Great leather reining plate, ice axe, hollow augers, leather slitter, box scraper, and bunch of other etc,Probably the best haul I have had in awhile.....Guess clean Living pays off after all
