Veritas Scrub Plane?

Veritas Hijack for Rob?

Rob Lee

>Hi John -

All that's left to do is pay the bills as the tooling is finished... I think we expect to be shipping about March or so - but I'm not at the office, and can't check.

We have only a couple of production parts finished now - the main body castings are what take the time. I believe the most complex mold has 7 sliding sections...

I do have images ready to "leak" - but we're still too far away from release to do so...

Can you give some details? Rob Cosman is already creating a market for the scrub with the DVD "rough to ready" , so you have to give us a reason why waiting till next year.....

Don't forget Valentine's Day! If men are....

>supposed to give diamonds to show they care, why not hand tools for men? "Show your woodworking husband you'd marry him all over again" I can see the ad already ;-)

Note to you catalog merchants. Great opportunity for targeted sales ;-)

>Hi Kees -

I'm not sure I can give you a reason to wait...other than price. Our target here is to hit the street at about the same price as a spokeshave (depending on the blade). The plan at the moment is to offer it with an A2 blade, and with a less expensive HC (or variant) blade.

Early surface model below...

>Ah! Battleship grey...appropriate for a plane on that mission :^)

What, no Norris style blade adjuster :^J

Seriously, it is great to see you people entering this segment of the market. I always thought the price of metal scrub planes was unjustified, putting them out of reach of most of the people who could otherwise make very good use of them. Now maybe there will be another valid answer to the "Which plane first", or at least "Which plane next" question. I still think wooden scrubs are too fragile for their mission.

>Hi -

You noticed the missing adjuster? :) Believe me - we discussed it!

Note too no "sides" (anyone shoot w/a scrub? :) )

We will be surface grinding the sole though - even though it's not necessary...

Cheers -

Rob

(BTW - in your post about the shoulder planes - the Norris adjuster is only there to accommodate the various lateral blade positions - not to actually adjust the blade laterally... the adjuster pin that engages the blade has a movement locus in two axes... )

>Norris adjuster is only there to accommodate the various lateral blade positions

Genius! So the pivoting action of the adjuster doesn't control the lateral movement of the blades, it allows it.

Of course, designing and making the adjuster just for this purpose would have been crazy, but since they're already part of the inventory...

Re: Yes..

William Duffield, on the Cohansey

>Aha! I agree with BugBear. An ingenious approach to the problem. I am very pleased with the very small amount of backlash in the BNSP's depth adjustment. Of course (now that you point it out), a round pin in a round hole can be machined to much closer tolerances than a slotted blade and slotted adjusting knob that have to allow lateral movement of the cutter. Also, your design doesn't tend to push or pull the blade back towards the center when you are adjusting depth and have intentionally skewed the cutter, like a slotted adjuster would.

I'll make sure I clean up that problem if I turn my comments on the bullnose plane into a real review.

Bit of overkill, there, Rob

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>Seems like a bit unnecessary to have the set screws - you're certainly not doing fine setting with a scrub plane iron!

Pretty tool, though, and good to hear that you're aiming for a reasonably good price - these are such useful tools that every hand tool user should have one.

>Given the "vigorous" use a scrub plane is subjected to, I'd have loved to have seen it with the "attached at top and bottom" handle from your bench planes.

Those handles must be near to indestructible.

>Not Rob, but yes, the twin rod attachment makes for a very secure tote and one that is less likely to break from torsional forces as well as inline forces. I don't think anyone will have problems with a tote of this nature breaking.

Laugh away, guys, but if I had

Lyn J. Mangiameli

>had my way, it would have had an adjuster and I think the lateral screws are very appropriate to a scrub.

With respect to the latter, scrubs are often used very roughly on woods where uneven surfaces result in uneven application of forces. It is quite possible to shift a blade in such circumstances, and while it usually won't have any effect on the surface finish, it does slow you down having to re set the blade position. I use a scrub a lot to surface chainsawed slabs and to flatten big turning blanks for a faceplate. I regulary have hassles with the blade shifting, and yes, I would like a simple means to dial in a small change in extension or retraction (which I do all the time with a #5 modified into a scrub).
