Yankee drill chuck idea

>Been thinking about a Yankee drill chuck to hold round drill bits lately. They are out there, but hard to find and $$$ when you do. Got to thinking, why can't I take one of my chucks off of a old junk hand-crankers, put in a bolt with the head cut off, cut and file the shank to the design of a Yankee screwdriver bit, and WA-LA! Yankee Drill bit chuck! Should work right? Hard part might be finding the bolt with the right thread to fit the chuck. Anybody done this already?

Perhaps regringing the tapered shank for brace drill bit chuck would be a better way to go, but than again I hate to modify another hard to find tool.

>Lot of ways to skin a yankee to do this, just not worth the effort IMO. Better off using the fluted bits in a 41, they drill in both directions and are dirt cheap. Apex made a line of adapters for yankees that are handy at times.

But i just don't see the need to use today's high speed drill bits in a yankee. Now that i think about it even a brace with chuck adapter really doesn't do the job. I guess just try and YMMV,not much to lose with trying this with the junk stuff that is out there.

Hey, hey, watch it there Mr. Dennis Wisenheimer, there'll be no Yankee Skinnin' 'round here. ;~)

Can we still buy rhses new? Where?

I've used the fluted bits that came with my flea market find push drills, and they do work very well, but I only have a few small ones.
