>I've noticed on a few of my type 11 and older planes, the totes are considerably smaller than on my later planes- almost requiring a three-fingered grip. I've heard of low knobs, but never heard nor read about a change of tote size on any type study. Does anyone know anything about this?

>I have a decent sampling of planes and have not noticed this. Are you comparing the same size planes? #4s and smaller have smaller totes than #5 and larger.

>There were changes in tote design over the years..the horn was shortened and had less of an angle..maybe giving you a tad bit more finger room..I'm partial to the old long horn totes..but my hands are what my mom called piano player hands...I've noticed a difference in diameter from the old to the newer models too...that'll certainly change the grip of a tote.

>Actually, I've got a type 9 #7 and a type 11 #4 that are small totes. With all my other Stanleys I can easily get my four fingers around the tote, but with these two, I've got to hold my index finger out like while using a backsaw.
