Evolution?

>I just noticed another change in my woodworking/carpentry habits on Friday.I was installing a striker plate on a newly built door jamb.Line up the plate location, mark the mortise outline using the plate as a guide, chisel out the shallow mortise and the next step has always been "drill out the deep mortise with a

7/8"paddle bit".Friday I grabbed for a 3/4" butt chisel and with a few easy chops cut out the mortise and intalled the plate. The square hole makes alot more sense. Thanks for listening.---Jack

>Ain`t this old timey carpentry stuff fun!

Stick with it long enough and these folks here will have you building stuff like cabinets and chairs and using something other than paint or varnish to finish those high falutin` projects(I know cause I`ve seen the pictures).

Maybe we ought to have Ellis post one of those old timey warnings at the top of the hand tool forum.Something Like "Abandon all hope ye who enter here".

Don`t know about the rest, but I`m darn proud of ya there chum.

You did take the time to put down that hammer and pick up a mallet before you hit that chisel didn`t ya?;^)

>Actually,I thought of a mallet. But alas,no choice but the 16oz Stanley. I was delicate tho and don't bring my good chisels on the job. I hit way too many nails in my work to risk good chisels.I use cheap butt chisels and sharpen alot.---Jack

>Sure sounds like Evolution to me. It has been said many times that we use power tools because we don't have the knowledge, skill, nor ability to use handtools anymore, which I believe is true. Afterall, why have a bunch of moulding planes when you can make your moulding in one easy pass with a shaper or router? Well, we know why, but that has been the thinking for a long time now. As we Galoots, and GIT get more experince with our handtools on a "hobby" level there is now doubt that they will creep into our professional life as well, which I think is certainly Evolution.

Good on ya' Jack!!
