Backsaw Question
Joel Oswald
>How come on backsaws, the back does not go all the way down on the blade, it only pinches the top 1/8-1/4 inch of the blade? Does this make it stiffer?
Why is this?

>I'm going to SWAG it. If the blade were fully inserted into the folded-over back, it would not significantly increase the stiffness, but would have a couple of disadvantages. It would either decrease the maximum depth of cut for a given width of saw steel, or it would require more (expensive) blade steel for the same depth of cut. Note that some back saws have a milled kerf in a solid brass back. These kerfs are usually only about 1/4" or 5/16" deep. Milling them deeper would just add to the cost, with the same disadvantages noted above.

>I was browsing the web the other day and found this web site. Prompted me to go down and start foolin' with a couple of the old backsaw blades I'd acquired. Great information that you might find useful.
