Crown molder

Jonathan Peck - N.Y.

>Would you pay $4,250 for a crown molder? Ok ok, I know it's not a user but....really?

If your interested, this one can be found at the best things and is an 18th century New England crown molder. It cuts a 4+1/4" wide ogee with reverse ogee, a very classic profile.

No

David Miller from Iowa

>But that's just me and I'm looking only at the user value. It's hard to imagine that one couldn't make (or farm out and have made) a custom profile in the choicest wood with a primo iron for a fraction of that.

I like mine

>I have a somewhat nicer one and it's a neat plane. Mine is made by and stamped W Martin Philad who was an early Philadelphia plane maker that worked from 1773-1801.Martin bore the standard of the Philadelphia Plane makers in the 1788 4th of July procession where all the trades were represented. This plane is a bit over 6 in. wide and is in very good condition.Has a hole in the front for a rope or stick to go into so it could be pulled by an apprentice to make it easier to use.Has the very wide champhers with the "quicks" , off set tote and is made out of Birch all 18th century charistics.Soon as I saw it I knew it was an 18th century plane even though I didn't recognise the name.Made up my mind it was coming home with me.Had to wait all day at the auction and when I held it up some other guy who knew somthing ,[but not enough!] butted heads with me over it. Think I got it for around $400, to tell the truth surprised me that it went that high. Afterwards the other bidder who no doubt really thought he was going to get it comes up to me and asks me "How high was you planning to go to?.......I told him about $75 ......Todd
