recent auction acquisitions

>Here are a couple of recent auction purchases. This first picture is of a complete set of paring chisels from 1/8" all the way to 2". They are stamped with "The Celebrated Van Camp Hardware and Iron Company", but from the look and shape of the the blades and the handles, they look like they may have been made for Van Camp by T.H. Witherby.

What's really kind of cool is that Van Camp was a local Harware company here in Indy many years ago which apparently completed with the likes of Belknap, E.C. Simmons, and Shapleigh. It just seems kind of satisfying to get a set of old tools with a local connection. All I need to do is turn a couple of handles for the smaller ones, then I'm set to go. I already had a couple of these Van Camps, and the steel is terrific. They were a bit more than I wanted to spend at $63, but for 12 chisels, I really couldn't beat it for a matched set.

>This is a picture of a Disston D-115 Victory saw that I picked up this morning at an auction (with 2 other low end saws) for a total of $3. I wasn't certain which Disston model it was since the etch is fairly light. It looked like a dirty D-8, but the chip carved handle made me think it might be a D-100. Got it home and cleaned it up, and discovered that the saw had an eagle etch, and that the handle was rosewood, and in terrific conditions. Judging from the model, the medallion, and the etch, it looks to be a 1917 model. It's kind of rare to be able to date a saw to the exact year, but the Disstonian Institute helped greatly.

So far, these are two of my favorite acquisitions for this rust hunting season.

>Nothing like finding something like that set of chisels, look's to me like you will get lot of years service and have something from your area at the same time. Maybe time to make special box for them..........just to keep them nice.

>I won't bother telling you that you are displaying the main feature of a well-designed vacuum since you probably already know that. Enjoy your loot.

Cheers,
