Dose any one use??

Chad Boehlke

>Dose any one use moulding planes in his/her shop? I have about 100 of them and often use one or two.I don't have a router, but would woodworkers use moulding planes if they could get them?

>I use H&Rs and beading planes quite a bit. I'll use complex profile molding planes if I have a profile I need. I don't think the issue is one of availability in most places. Rather, I think that most woodworkers are unfamiliar with how to tune, sharpen, and set molding planes so that they work. Until a molding plane is properly set up, an attempt to use it is an excercise in frustration. The plane will either clog, not cut, not cut the entire profile, or all of the above. Although most old planes can be made to work as good as new, some are too warped or damaged to ever be put to use again.

There are also a few tricks I've learned along the way--like wetting end grain--that help a lot.

>I use them often and wish I had 100. They take some time to sharpen the profiles via slipstone, but work like a charm. There is a trick however - you must use very clear, straight grained wood. If you do so and pay attention to the grain, they are a joy to use.

>Not just use, but I am looking for more. I don't have anywhere near 10, let alone 100. Due to my level of experience I tend to buy in good condition. I hope to learn how to tell what is/isn't redeemable so that I can start to rehabbing a few to add to my arsenal.
