The Complete Guide to Sharpening

Janet Yang

>In his book, Leonard Lee mentioned two devices for sharpening drill bits. One device swings the drill bit across a grinding wheel, but it's the *other* one that I really want to try. It pulls the bit in a kind of hopping motion across a sheet of sandpaper.

I've started using 3M micro-abrasive film to sharpen chisels, and the stuff works beautifully. It would probably do an equally good job on drill bits--but I can't find that hopping jig anywhere. I even called Lee Valley but the clerk had never heard of it.

Does anybody know who makes this device and where I can buy one?

>Janet Your almost waisting your time with sandpaper drill bits are to hard to bother with that. If you learn how to hold the bit in your hand and just roll it on the grinder you can do a very good job takes a little practice to get the center. I do agree with the automatic sharpeners though.

Sounds like the Eclipse #39. I have one - they come up second hand. (and scarcely used ;-) at car boot sales over here.

I have one, and have tried to use it; I have never succeeded.

>Hi Janet -

Back in the days when Lee Valley ONLY sold cast iron barrel stove kits - yours truly did a lot of grinding and drilling of cast iron, and used that sharpener a lot. I found that it was most effective on bits 1/4" and under.

I had really good success with that jig - at the time, the best device on the market, and no electricity necessary.

We last had it cataloged in 2000/2001 - and may be able to locate one at a store (old displays..).

If you contact me by email - I'll let you know if we can find one.

Cheers -

>Janet,

Years ago (maybe twenty) my brother and I got one from Brookstone Hard-to-find Tools. I haven't seen it in there catalogue in the past few years. We both had lots of success with it. It was easy to use with brief glance at the instructions.
