Flattening laminated edge grain?

Gil

>I'm making a end grain cutting board. Any ideas how I can flatten this top surface? I guess I would like to thickness plane it with a hand plane. The bottom is pretty close to true already. I would like to get all the segments equally sized. I have several #5 type planes and a couple smaller planes.

Tomorrow I have to sharpen some of my old girls up and try to true 4 pieces like this. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Gil

>saw pieces to thickness

glue together to big board. (I'm assuming this is a normal sized cutting board not asomething 6' long)

champher edge of board so when plane goes off edge it doesn't splinter out.

plane away.

for a consistent thickness after one side is flat use a marking gauge to scribe the thickness of the other side all around.

chamfer other side to scribe line.

plane away falt to line.

>I have read that the original purpose of a Low Angle Jack Plane was for resurfacing the end grain on butcher block. The original kind of butcher block that is all end grain straight up, not the counter top stuff.
