Done Milling!!! Pic #1

Dan Clermont in Burnaby

>We didn't use a pit saw for this event and we didn't use 'lectricity. We did burn some fossil fuel though.

I can scratch my knees without bending over and I am absolutely exhausted. The pile of Maple we slabbed was 10 feet by 10 feet and 28" high. All wood was milled to 9/4 and we guesstimate the pile to be about 2500BF. This doesn't include two truck loads of turning blanks and other small pieces of project wood. In total it was 6 truck loads of maple.

Allot of curly and spalted maple. Unfortunately my wife hates spalted maple so I am hoping somebody else wants it while I get some of the lighter boards.

Really though, its a whole lotta wood for 2 1/2 days work but the price was right.

We hired a sawyer with a 130 cc mill for the big stuff while we puttered with our smaller mills. I kept hitting nails and rocks so I didn't get allot done on the first day but quartered a 31" diameter log on day two and then ripped quite a few boards until hitting another bloody nail!!

The wood all has to get reloaded and dropped off at the Kiln later this week.

Here are some pics. THis pic shows my buddy Randy and Allan (they really aren;t smiling cause they hand bombed all that wood into the backyard)

Great work guys.

>Bet you slept good every night.Milling is one of those activtities that you don`t really mind how sore you are at the end of the day(and for the next 2 days) because you can`t stop thinking about all the projects you and your friends are going to make from your labor.

If those trees had any history to them I`d write it down somewhere so you could include it with any projects.I`ve found that friends and family members seem to be just as interested in the story of the wood as the story of the piece itself.Pull out those pics at the next family get together and be prepared to talk for awhile, even non-WWers can relate to milling your own wood.

BTW-I have noticed that pieces made from wood with history sell better at the gallery. If they are highly figured then they almost fly out the door.

Nice haul! Thanks for both posting the pics and for not letting all that beautiful wood go to waste.

Mainely,Bob

PS-If you didn`t do it this time, next time think VIDEO.

>Way to go Dan,

Looks like you West Coast Wood Butchers had a lot of fun. How much beer did it cost you (that can raise the price of the wood significantly...)? Did you guys rent the mill?

Thanks for the pictures,

Frank

>Hi Pam,

I did call Rob Cosman before we started and he didn't have one stinking tool he could sell me that would do the job better ;)

When is LN going to come out with a Mill

>Hi Frank,

Lotsa beer was consumed after the chainsaws were turned off. We hired a local Sawyer with a Large 130cc Chainsaw and 48" Alaskan Mill. He did the big stuff while we did some of the smaller logs with a 100cc saw and a teeny weeny 58cc saw. Then their was the Tiny itsy bitsy teeny weeny Poulan which can take on anything its 12" bar can handle.

Dan Clermont

Heck!! We even had a motorhome, BBQ and a Special Guest. Named Thor!!!!

Thor is a very very large bull which shared the pasture with our 48" diameter log.

I'll see if I can dig up a pic of Thor later.

>Randy was the organizer of the event. He was the one who made contact with the owners, and the Kiln to make the milling operation happen.

He is also storing about $20,000 in Figured Spalted Maple in his backyard right now until we can organizing a trailer fo rthe Kiln.

Rany also forgot to mention the large Diameter tree was in a Bull's pasture. You gotta see the horns on Thor as well.

A great time was had by all.

>The saw my brother went home with was a 130cc with a 48" bar too,a Sachs Dolmar.

When that thing is at high idle all you can hear is the chain whizzing around,it drowns out the sound of the exhaust.Scary, definately scary, but fun to work with.

With the bar buried my brother put all his 220+(he won`t say how much more than 220)down on it and it doesn`t even slow down.I was impressed.

>First time Thor met a chainsaw it was a 1955 Homelite that barks worse than my grade 2 teacher. Thor jogged a few laps around the stump then went to lay down for a while. He sure left a lot of calling cards though :)

>Thanks for the Welcome Don. I've been lurking on the Hand Tool side for a while and occaisionally post on the main forum. Sometimes I drool on the turning forum.

What would the shipping be from the West Coast of Canada to Florida?

Once all the wood is devided among the individuals who contributed we'll see if there is anything left, and if there is we may consider parting with it for cheap.

Dan only wanted enough to make some chisel Handles and I think his alloted amount is somewhere around 200 bdft.

Re: Done Milling!!! Pic #1

I meant 400 bd ft.

400 BF for chisels?!?!?!

That's a lot of chisels there! Of course you guys have huge trees out west, so I guess your chisels are bigger too.

Safety alert!

Bob Hackett

>Spalted maple can be very dangerous to use as handle material, especially figured soft maple.

I suggest you immediately ship both that wood AND what must be the world`s largest stash of chisels directly to Maine where we can properly dispose of that dangerous wood and handle those chisels with the proper local wood(rock maple, the only REAL handle material. Now don`t you desert ironwood boys start.) as time permits.Of course it will be a long process,We`ll let you know as soon as the prototypes are out of the R+D department.;^)
