Mission chair glue up?

Frank

>Howdy

I am almost at the point of gluing up my new mission chair that has 40 mortise and tenon in it. I was think to give it the first coat of tung oil to the outside before I glue it up because it may be easier to clean up the Glue joints at assembly time. Also I was going to keep the oil out of all the inside joints. Just looking for some feed back???

>Sounds like a plan but, (yea, I alwasy seem to say this...) every piece of AC furniture can be built in sections. Just a metter of pulling it apart as an assembly and looking at it. Most times it means putting sides or backs together and use one or the other as clamps and holders during the first part of assembly. Next the sides on the seat and back. Hope you get me, Scott on a mean sugar rush...Gimmie another Reese's...no...Twix...

>I like to prefinish all the pieces, and then touch up as necessary afterward. I use thin shellac as the finish, and it's easy to wipe off and repair smudges (compared to bare wood). Prefinishing makes glue squeezeout easy to wipe off, because the glue is water soluble and water is not a shellac solvent (this would be true of other finishes as well). I also do a neater job of applying finish if I do it with the pieces unjoined, than trying to do it after there are a zillion intersections and shadow lines to try to get into without leaving a glop here and there. Finally, if it turns out that I have an odd-colored piece of wood in the wrong place (which isn't always obvious before the finish hits it), there's still the option to replace it or adjust the color.
