Brass vs Copper strength

Ernie Miller Topeka

>So I am building this little plane little is the word here I need a for lack of a better word a lever cap to hold a wedge in place. I spent the morning at the scrap iron yard and could not find a suitable peice of brass. But I did find some nice 1/2" thick bar of copper will this stuff be way to short to hols a wedge in place for a 1 1/4" wide blade? I did manage to pick up some nice brass kick plates and some 5/8 aluminum bar stocl also but think this copper would look better. so what do you say YA or NA?

Copper would probably be too soft for most tool making applications.

In my experience cooper is harder than brass, unless it has been annealed, but just hammering it will harden it again.

Most aluminum is soft too.

Bronze?

Bob Hackett

>Ernie,

I`m holding in my hand one of the old bronze caps that Cecil Pierce used for his smaller planes. The rough casting is 3" long by 1 1/4 wide by 5/16 thick. Can you use it?

If you can I`d be glad to send it your way along with a knob casting to go with it.
