Epoxy

>Ernie, I've found Acraglas epoxy an excellent way to attach wood to metal...permanently. There are release agents you can use to protect surrounding surfaces, dyes to tint it, etc.

Unlike an edge joint to glue two pieces of wood together, you want to scratch or roughen up the metal surface a little to help insure a good bond. If you ever want to take it apart in the future you will probably have to freeze it and then give it a good rap.
