Workbench Finish

Bob Rozaieski

>Well I searched the archives in the hand tools and main messageboards and can't seem to find much help so I'll ask again (I know this question has come up before). What finish is recommended for a traditional workbench?

I'm in the process of replacing my Bob Key type 2X4 workbench with a nicer, heavier one made from birch (Thanks Malcolm!). The base is almost done and I think it would be best to finish it before adding the top. So what would be a good finish? I really don't want to use poly or acryllic or anything "plastic" like, even though it would offer the most protection. So should I just wipe on several coats of BLO? Tung oil? Thin it with spirits? Wax over oil? Other options or what y'all did with your own benches? I especially want to be able to re-flatten the top without planing off a film finish if possible to save my irons when the time comes, hence my propensity for the oils. I'll be sure and post pics when I have a little more of it done.

Thanks as always!

>Thinned BLO is fine. If you really think you need a finish at all. Quick and easy.

>Bob ... BLO (about 6-7 coats) has served me well for about 40 years. I scrub the bench down with naptha about once a year and then flatten (about once every couple of years) and then hit with a card scraper (lightly), followed by a couple of coats of BLO .... rj
