LN Mortise Chisels

Re: LN Mortise Chisels

>Yes these are from a pre-production run, I don't know much about the runs though. I went to a woodworking show a few weeks back and they had one chisel out for display and said I could order a set but they have to squeeze the runs in between the bench chisel runs so it would be 4-6 weeks for delivery. Something about not being able to make both at once but they have to alternate between the two different types. They come in 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2. The ones in the picture I posted are 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2. The handles on the 1/4 and 3/8 are the same size but the 1/2 is bigger. As soon as my camera recharges I can take a few more pictures and post them. They look and feel really nice, I can't wait to use them. For the furniture stuff I do I think the size and weight of these will be much better then the huge pig stickers I use now. The bad news is I'm going out of town for a couple weeks so it will be a while before I get a chance to even sharpen them.

Someone at LN has been reading the right books. The unusual "5/16" size is to allow work with 4S 1" stock. Since the rule of thumb for a mortise is 1/3 the stock dimension, and planed 1" stock ain't quite 16/16", the 5/16" mortise chisel size is spot on.

>I have a 5/8 heavy duty sorby that I don't like at all. Barely holds an edge. The one I use most is a 3/8 made by Jim Wilson that is great. It's about the same size as the sorby but holds an edge for a long time and the ferrels never come loose. He's not making them anymore though. I expect the LN ones to be closer to Jim's. I also have an old 1/4 witherby, I think anyway, that's a good size, pretty close to the LN actually, and even it holds an edge better then the sorby. I want to get a comparison shot of all of them and post it if I get some time tonight after work.

>I agree. This, along with a 5/8, is a size that is often difficult to obtain, but most useful for the reasons you state.

Given some of the Sorbys I've got, Witherbys must be pretty wonderful.

>Bugbear you are probably correct and I should have qualified my statment some. I haven't been able to aquire any vintage Sorbys. I haven't been able to aquire any new Witherbys. So in truth I also haven't been able to compare similar vintage tools at all. My statment was comparing old Witherbys and recent Sorbys and as in other type tools(read hand planes) that is most unfair. Thanks for creating the opportunity to be more specific.JR
info on ordering
Mike in Mystic
>I emailed LN and received a response from Michelle that the chisels already delivered were from a practice run and all of them have been sold (no surprise). They are taking preorders, though, so if you want your name on the list you should email LN as I did. They quoted me the same $50 that MC paid, which seems like a very good price. The socket chisels are so amazingly nice to use, I can't wait to use the mortise chisels.
